A manufacturer is a type of production company that specializes in creating goods in large quantities. These companies typically work with clients who are interested in purchasing products in bulk. To meet the demands of these clients, manufacturers may operate as a Contract Manufacturer (CM), which means that they produce goods according to the specifications provided by the client. Alternatively, they may act as an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), which involves designing and producing a product that can then be sold to Direct Private Labels (DPL) or Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). These clients can then add their own branding to the product before distributing it to their customers. 

Direct Private Label (DPL)

Direct Private Labels are companies one step removed from. the manufacturer. They purchase materials directly from the manufacturer, often times making specification adjustment requests and adding value in the form of quality inspection, product modifications and service.


In the modern sense, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are companies that may or may not manufacture products themselves, but sell them to distribution or channel clients for use by end customers. OEMs generally produce higher-margin products in-house and outsource the production of lower-margin or later maturity cycle products to other manufacturers. They often work with an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) in a Joint Design Manufacturing (JDM) agreement to produce products.

Primary Distributor

Primary Distributors are global aggregators of many of the world’s products. They establish direct relationships with any product provider, whether at the OEM or very large DPL level, to store, sell, and promote their products to clients with a certain revenue scale. The are monolithic with a wide array of focus, their primary incentive system is to keep the product producers happy and to keep processes obscure for clients.


Third-Party Logistics (3PL) companies are logistics operators that store, package, and ship products to end customers or other companies. They can be utilized by Direct Private Labels or Private Labels to minimize warehouse and logistics staff at an increased Cost of Goods Sold to the end customer.

Private Label

Private Labels are generally companies that are localized to a specific market or geography and are modest to small in size. They can be service providers that want to offer branded products to their end clients with their own logo. However, they are often not large enough to engage directly with manufacturers and source their materials through Direct Private Labels, resellers, or other channel distributions to rebrand. They do not offer any technological improvements to the end product.

Channel Distributor

Similar to Private Labels, Channel Distributors are smaller distributors that are not large enough to form direct relationships with OEMs or manufacturers and instead rely on Primary Distributors for their products. These companies are typically focused on fulfilling orders for clients and may offer minimal service adders at a higher margin. Their primary function is to act as a middleman between the Primary Distributors and the end customer.

Channel Distributors may offer certain value-added services such as packaging, labeling, and shipping of products, but they generally do not provide any significant technological or engineering improvements to the products they sell. Instead, they focus on providing a convenient and reliable supply chain for their customers.

Reseller and/ or VAR

Resellers and Value Added Resellers (VAR) are typically the final step prior to products reaching the end user. They work to funnel products from distribution to the end customer and derive their value from bundled services, making their model dependent upon finding large customers or forcing service lock-ins to smaller clients in order to realize a specific customer return on investment. If a customer is not able to provide the desired return on investment, the reseller or VAR may drop the account or product.

Resellers typically focus on distributing products to customers while VARs offer additional value-added services such as consulting, installation, and maintenance. VARs may also offer customized solutions to meet the specific needs of their customers. By offering these value-added services, VARs are able to differentiate themselves from other resellers and offer a more comprehensive solution to their customers.

Customers are the ultimate end users of products, and their primary incentive is to pay a fair price that is commensurate with the overall value they can derive from the product. However, this can be difficult in the current supply and distribution modes as the incentive systems in place are not aligned with the interests of the end customer. To avoid this, we work directly with manufacturers and direct private labels (DPLs) to provide our customers with high-quality products at affordable prices.

          You might be wondering why manufacturers don't just sell directly to customers. The answer is that manufacturing is all about efficiency and economies of scale. Manufacturers prefer to produce large quantities of the same product and sell them to a single buyer, who will then distribute them.  The role of Unlocked Networks  is to take the incoming demands from all our users and work to provide value to our suppliers while also providing them with higher volumes to achieve cost points you'd normally only find if you were buying millions of dollars a year.           Term: DPLs are only one step removed from the manufacturers and provide added value to the product, such as quality control and localized engineering support in contrast to Private Labels, which can be several steps removed and have been rebranded several times.

          How long does it typically take for orders to be fulfilled and shipped out?
          At Unlocked Networks, we recognize the importance of timely order fulfillment for our customers. Our platform offers real-time inventory levels and expected delivery times based on your location, ensuring transparency and accuracy, although shipping times may vary. For materials in stock, we typically ship them out on the following business day for orders received prior to 2PM Pacific.

          In the event that a product is out of stock, we provide replenishment estimates to inform you of the estimated duration from the time of order until it is received. Additionally, we collaborate with our suppliers to ensure that we can generally receive more units within two weeks, or a few days if there is an urgent need.

          Moreover, we provide the option to delay shipment of materials. If you place an order but do not require immediate shipment, we can retain the materials for you, provided that there is a specified shipment date.

          For businesses that cannot afford any downtime, we offer Mission Critical products that are rated as the top performers in their category and are designed to function reliably in a wide range of environments. These products come with top-tier quality and support and provide businesses with the peace of mind they need with little to no additional complexity.


          For businesses that need high-quality products that meet their expectations but don't require as many features as the Mission Critical products, we offer Enterprise products. While they may not be the best option for extreme conditions like deployment in the desert, these products provide amazing value and reliability for their intended use.


          Finally, for businesses that want to save money while realizing good value and reasonable quality, we offer Base products. While they may have some limitations in terms of features and use cases, they offer a compelling use and are a great option for businesses looking to save on costs.
